Crumbl Cookies has closed its Franklin Street location after just over three years in business.

The store, located in Suite 150 at 133 West Franklin St., first opened its doors in February of 2023. It was owned by husband and wife Craig and Rebecca Church, Brian Church, Russ Church, Josh Watson and Corbin Linde when it first opened. Its Carolina Square suite was previously occupied by ivy & leo, a boutique clothing store.

The Crumbl Cookies brand began in Utah in 2017 and has grown to over 1,000 locations in the United States. Its claim-to-fame is having “the world’s best chocolate chip cookie” and a line-up of cookie flavors that rotate each week — meaning customers rarely get the same batch of recipes each visit.

Crumbl’s Chapel Hill location was unique in that it ran in-game promotions with the UNC men’s and women’s basketball. Called “Crumbl At The Line,” if an opposing player missed two consecutive free throws during the second half of home games at the Dean Smith Center and Carmichael Arena, attendees would receive a code for free cookies from the local franchise.

Chapel Hill’s Crumbl is just the latest store closed by the company, as it has recently enacted similar closures in Germantown, MD, Tallahassee, TN, and Jersey City, NJ.

While the Chapel Hill location may have closed its doors, cookie lovers can still find the chain’s offerings at its Southpoint location in south Durham. The business’ closure leaves Insomnia Cookies as Franklin Street’s only dedicated cookie restaurant.
