The red-hot Vance Honeycutt has been one of the main reasons for the Diamond Heels’ late-season surge, and now the freshman phenom is getting recognition from the ACC. Honeycutt was named as the conference’s Co-Player of the Week Monday afternoon.

Honeycutt put together a .474 batting average during UNC’s five-game week, batting 9-19 and hitting three home runs. When including Carolina’s series finale against NC State the previous Sunday, Honeycutt hit home runs in four consecutive contests. His 15 long balls this season are tied for second on the team.

Of Honeycutt’s nine hits this past week, five were of the extra-base variety. The hot streak raised his slugging percentage, which measures the average bases hit for per at-bat, to a team-high .594. His batting average has also taken a massive leap, going from .251 to as high as .284.

UNC scored 12 runs three times last week, and Honeycutt was a major factor in the offensive explosion. Honeycutt amassed seven RBI and six runs scored during the five-game stretch. He is second on the team in runs (48) and third in RBI (35). Honeycutt also stole four bases during the week, moving him further into the team lead with 27. He is the only player in the country with at least 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases. Honeycutt is also one of only four Tar Heels to start all 50 games this season.

Carolina will be back in action this weekend when the team hosts Florida State at Boshamer Stadium for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m.
