Shortstop prospect Tyler Jackson, the son of UNC assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Scott Jackson, committed to the Diamond Heels Tuesday. A rising junior in high school, Jackson is the first member of the recruiting class of 2028 to commit to UNC. In a nice coincidence for his future head coach, Jackson’s commitment also came on Scott Forbes’ 52nd birthday.
Jackson currently plays at Southeast Alamance High School in Haw River. Perfect Game rates him at 9.5/10, indicating it believes he is a “potential top 10 round pick and/or highest level college prospect.” Tyler’s father Scott shared his excitement at his son’s announcement on social media, posting a picture of the two together at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha this past summer.
The 2026 season was Scott Jackson’s 10th overall with the UNC staff and second of his second stint. He first joined head coach Mike Fox’s staff in the summer of 2008, eventually helping the Diamond Heels appear in Omaha three times. He then departed to become head coach at Liberty, where he led the Flames to three NCAA Regional appearance and won 246 total games, the third most in program history. Jackson returned to Chapel Hill ahead of the 2025 season.
Tyler Jackson will now join a UNC program which has produced first-round picks in each of the last three MLB Drafts. That includes shortstop Jake Schaffner, who went No. 20 overall to the Boston Red Sox in the 2026 draft.
