Graduate forward Brady Manek will be bringing some hardware home to Chapel Hill, regardless of how this weekend goes.
Manek was named Friday as the winner of the 2022 Riley Wallace Award, given to the top transfer in Division I college basketball.
Manek transferred to Carolina this past offseason after starting for four seasons with the Oklahoma Sooners. This season with the Tar Heels, Manek is averaging a career-high 15.2 points per game, while also setting career-high marks in two-point percentage (61.0), three-point percentage (39.8) and overall field goal percentage (49.5). He scored a season-high 28 points in UNC’s opening-round win against Marquette in the NCAA Tournament, and followed that up with a 26-point outing in 30 minutes against No. 1 seed Baylor. He is shooting 16-34 on three-pointers in those four games and averaging 21.5 points per game.
The Wallace Award is named for the former head coach at Hawaii, who frequently relied on transfers during his tenure. Wallace is the winningest coach in the history of the Hawaii program. Manek is the first Tar Heel to ever win the award.
Manek and Carolina will take the court Saturday night against Duke in the Final Four at approximately 8:49 p.m., though that start time is subject to change.
