This just in: Hubert Davis is far from the 13th best coach in the ACC.
One of my favorite things about Hubert is when he says that coaching basketball at the University of North Carolina is missionary work, an act of service. And he really believes that.
But none of it is volunteer work, which I am sure he has found out by now. He’s also learned that he has won two national Coach Of The Year awards – and counting.
Davis turned out to be the perfect hire for UNC and Bubba Cunningham — lifelong fan of the school, disciple of Dean Smith and the first choice of Roy Williams as his successor.
Davis might have taken the job for nothing, or at least for what he was making as Ol’ Roy’s assistant for the last nine years. But all that has obviously changed since he found out how frickin’ hard it is.
Starts out 12-6 and finishes 29-10, which looks like 17-4 down the long stretch since late January through March Madness, where he finished second in the country for a measly $1,750,000.
He is earning $575,000 in bonuses after his team reached the NCAA championship game and was four points away from another $250k if Armando Bacot didn’t have to play on one foot, Brady Manek wasn’t concussed at least twice by Kansas elbows, Caleb Love hadn’t turned his ankle and Puff Johnson puked on the court from being punched in the stomach by someone in a white uniform (actually, not really sure why Puff was puking).
The N&O printed the income of ACC basketball coaches from 2021, which had Coach K at the top with $7 million, retired Roy second with $4.168 million and seven coaches who were either fired or didn’t make the NCAA tournament this season ahead of Hubert. Counting those coaches who made the Big Dance, Hubert was listed as 13th, making more than only BC’s Jim Christianson, who was also fired.
Sure, there are about 200 years of head coaching experience in the league before you get to Hubert’s one. But none on that list, from what I can tell, made the NCAAs in his first season, let alone the Final Four.
Bubba, I am confident you are thinking the same thing. But, just in case, time to tear up that bargain-basement contract and pay Hubert what he deserves for taking us to the mountaintop in Year 1.
