After Carolina’s Final Four game with Duke earned its place in TV lore with massive viewership numbers, Monday night’s championship game with Kansas also marked a banner day for TBS. The network’s broadcast of the game averaged 18.1 million viewers, which marked a four-percent increase from last season’s Gonzaga-Baylor game.
The entire tournament saw a marked increase in viewership from 2021: an average of 10.7 million viewers tuned in all month, which was a 13 percent increase from last year’s edition. Its 17.0 share, which measures the percentage of households actively watching a broadcast, is the best for the NCAA Tournament since 1994.
The Kansas-UNC game on Monday was both the most-watched title game and the third most-watched college basketball game of any kind in the history of cable television. The only two games above it were UNC and Duke’s game two days earlier (18.5 million viewers) and the 2015 national semifinal between Wisconsin and Kentucky in 2015 (22.63 million viewers).
The March Madness Live streaming service also broke multiple records for its showing of the game. Its 1.6 million concurrent streams surpassed the mark set two days earlier during the UNC-Duke game, and its social engagements surpassed the previous high by 33 percent. Engagement during the tournament as a whole increased 58 percent over 2021.
