While the main focus of almost all Carolina fans was on basketball this past weekend, several other UNC programs continued to showcase outstanding performances. Three of those programs saw one of their student-athletes earn weekly recognition on both a conference and national level.
In men’s tennis, the No. 5 ranked doubles team of Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger were named ACC Doubles Team of the Week for a third time this season. Kiger and Cernoch helped Carolina win the doubles point in matches against Clemson and Georgia Tech over the weekend, both Tar Heel victories. UNC has won five straight matches and currently sits with a 13-6 overall record and 8-2 mark in ACC play. They’ll next be in action April 15 at Wake Forest.
The top-ranked women’s tennis team stayed undefeated over the weekend with an epic win over No. 2 NC State, and Cameron Morra was named ACC Player of the Week for her efforts. Morra defeated NC State’s Jaeda Daniel, ranked No. 14 in the nation, in the match with the Wolfpack. Earlier in the weekend, Morra also beat No. 48 Carolyn Campana of Wake Forest, giving her two top-50 wins in three days. The women’s tennis team will next be in action Friday at 3 p.m. against Clemson.
The UNC women’s lacrosse team also held its place at No. 1 this weekend, and goalie Taylor Moreno was a big reason why. Moreno made a season-high 16 saves in Carolina’s win against Notre Dame on Saturday and earned her third ACC Defensive Player of the Week award this season. In addition, the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association also named Moreno its National Defensive Player of the Week. The Tar Heels will be back in action Saturday at 2 p.m. at Syracuse.
