The UNC women’s soccer team posted yet another impressive result in a preseason exhibition, topping No. 3 BYU 2-0 at Dorrance Field on Saturday.

One goal in each half did the trick for the Tar Heels, who finish 2-0 in their preseason exhibition schedule. Carolina did not allow a goal in either game and outshot VCU and BYU by a combined margin of 65-11.

“Our kids work to win the ball back,” said head coach Anson Dorrance. “I want to credit [associate head coach] Damon Nahas for all the work he’s doing to have us become a very dangerous attacking team and have us evolve into a very sophisticated team. We’re not there yet, but there were some very good moments. I’m very proud of where we are right now, but also of where we are going.”

Freshman Tori Dellaperuta scored her second goal of the preseason in first half, scoring off an assist from midfielder Sam Meza in the 12th minute. Avery Patterson, who scored twice in the win against VCU, scored early in the second half to double the lead.

“It was bouncing around the box, and I just happen to put my foot on it,” Patterson said. “I was just in the right place at the right time.”

The Cougars finished with just six shot attempts, compared with 26 for UNC. Nine Tar Heels took at least two shots, and Dorrance used his substitutions liberally.

“We knew with the effectiveness of our recruiting, we were going to have two starting lineups and tonight we played three,” he said. “This is a talented team and a deep team, and it’s got a nice range of seniority and youth.”

Fresh off the impressive results, Carolina will officially open the regular season on August 18 against No. 11 Tennessee. Like the previous two exhibitions, this match will also take place at Dorrance Field.
