Olivia Thomas scored two more goals to earn her second brace in the last three matches as Carolina beat James Madison 3-0 on the road Sunday afternoon. It’s Carolina’s first road win of the season and fifth straight win overall.

Thomas’ first goal came in the 17th minute, as the star forward was in the right place at the right time to deflect an attempted clearance from the JMU goalkeeper into the back of the net.

Freshman Lauren Malsom doubled the UNC lead with her first collegiate goal less than five minutes later, gliding through the Dukes’ back line and firing a rocket into the net.

The one-way traffic continued after halftime, with Thomas scoring her second goal after corralling a long pass from teammate Riley Kennedy and finding the bottom corner. Thomas has now scored five goals in her last three matches seven through eight matches this season, the most on the team.

UNC outshot James Madison 12-1 on the day and did not allow a shot on goal for the first time this year. Four Tar Heels registered at least two shots on goal.

The win improves Carolina to 6-2 this season after a 1-2 start. The Tar Heels have outscored their opponents 16-1 during their five-match winning streak. Up next, UNC opens ACC play when it visits Virginia Tech Thursday at 7 p.m.
