Two goals in the final 18 minutes of action in Blacksburg doomed the UNC women’s soccer team Saturday night, as the Tar Heels fell to Virginia Tech, 2-1.

As has been the case in each of Carolina’s three losses this season, the team held a lead in the second half but couldn’t finish the job. Senior midfielder Libby Moore’s first goal of the season gave the Tar Heels the lead in the first half, and the team appeared to be in complete control of things at halftime. UNC was outshooting the Hokies 11-1.

But things took a turn late, as Virginia Tech equalized in the 72nd minute and then took a man advantage in the 82nd. Senior midfielder Maggie Pierce picked up her second yellow card of the night, resulting in a red and her disqualification from the match. It only took three minutes for Virginia Tech to find the winning goal.

The loss drops UNC to 9-3 overall and just 2-2 in conference play. It’s also the team’s first loss on the road this season. Carolina will look to bounce back with three straight home matches in the next 12 days. The first comes against Pitt on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
