A pair of second-half goals from Kate Faasse was enough to see Carolina past No. 12 Virginia Tech in the opening round of the ACC Tournament on Sunday night at Dorrance Field. With the 2-0 win, UNC will move on to the conference semifinals against top-ranked Duke.

After a scoreless first half in which the Tar Heels controlled most of the possession, Faasse struck via a penalty kick in the 67th minute to give Carolina a 1-0 lead. Faasse doubled that advantage barely a minute later from open play, heading in a cross from point-blank range. Faasse has now scored three times in UNC’s last two matches and a team-best 14 times on the season.

The Carolina defense held the Hokies without a shot on target for the entire 90 minutes after allowing 24 shots on goal in the previous two matches combined. It’s the first time the Tar Heels have held an ACC opponent without a shot on goal all season and just the second time overall.

Now 15-4 overall, UNC will advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals after falling in the opening round last season. The Tar Heels will take on No. 1 Duke on Thursday, November 7 at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. Kickoff time is yet to be announced, and the match will be broadcast on ACC Network. The Blue Devils have already beaten Carolina twice this season.
