After finishing the 2021 regular season undefeated and advancing to the national semifinals, expectations surrounding the UNC women’s lacrosse team are sky-high for 2022. Six members of the team received preseason All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine, including four named to the first team.
The six preseason honorees are most among any program in the nation.
Attacker Jamie Ortega, midfielder Ally Mastroianni, defender Emma Trenchard and goalie Taylor Moreno, all seniors in 2022, were named to the first team. All four of these players were unanimous first team All-Americans in 2021, with Ortega, Mastroianni and Moreno taking the ACC’s top awards at their positions. Ortega led Carolina in goals, points and shots. Mastroianni, the Tar Heels’ draw specialist, set a career-high with 112 draw controls last season. Trenchard forced 17 turnovers on her way to her third consecutive first team All-America appearance, while Moreno earned ACC Tournament MVP honors.
USA Lacrosse also named Trenchard and Moreno its preseason Defender and Goalie of the Year, respectively.
The Tar Heels won their fifth consecutive ACC Tournament in 2021, while appearing in the program’s ninth Final Four in 12 seasons and finishing 20-1.
In addition, graduate transfer Andie Aldave earned second team honors and midfield, and junior transfer Olivia Dirks was named to the third team at the same position. Aldave transferred to Carolina from Notre Dame, while Dirks comes to Chapel Hill from Penn State.
Carolina has not yet revealed its schedule for the 2022 season as the program pursue its third national championship.
