In its 2022 home opener, the No. 2 UNC women’s lacrosse team flexed its muscles in the first half and breezed to a victory over Furman Wednesday afternoon.

Carolina exploded out of the gate, scoring its first seven goals within the game’s first 10 minutes. Fifth-year attacker Jamie Ortega scored the first two goals, before five different Tar Heels found the net on the next five. Ortega would add her third before the end of the quarter, and graduate Andie Aldave would put in her second with 29 seconds left to give UNC a 9-2 lead after 15 minutes.

The Tar Heels didn’t let up as the first quarter turned to the second. Ortega followed up a goal from senior attacker Tayler Warehime (which Ortega assisted) with two more of her own, bringing her total to five on the day. It was her 27th career game with five goals. Ortega’s two assists gave her a team-high seven points. She has scored a goal in 36 straight games, and recorded a point in 65 straight.

Ortega is now in second place all-time in the ACC with 271 career goals. Boston College’s Sam Apuzzo holds the record with 283.

Head coach Jenny Levy dug into her bench in the second half, and 10 Tar Heels would end up with a goal to their name. Aldave and sophomore attacker Caitlyn Wurzburger each amassed hat tricks, with Wurzburger dishing out a team-high three assists. UNC scored at least three goals in each quarter, and its 20 total goals are its most in a game since a 20-8 win against Virginia last April.

Three players appeared in net for Carolina, with Taylor Moreno making her 56th consecutive start and recording two saves before being pulled to begin the third quarter. Even in the short outing, Moreno notched her 50th career win as a Tar Heel, breaking the record held by former goalie Caylee Waters.

Moreno won’t have to wait long to try for her 51st win, as Carolina will travel down to the Sunshine State this weekend for a Saturday game at No. 7 Florida. The Tar Heels defeated the Gators, 11-5, in Chapel Hill last season.
