The No. 8 UNC women’s basketball team played in Carmichael Arena for the first time in three weeks Wednesday night, and got back on the winning side of things with a 64-42 win against UNC-Wilmington.
Three Tar Heels scored in double figures against the Seahawks, led by junior Alyssa Ustby with 16 points on 8-10 shooting. Ustby also grabbed 10 rebounds to register her 18th double-double of her career and third of the season. Guard Kennedy Todd-Williams and Deja Kelly contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Carolina didn’t exactly shoot the lights out of Carmichael and never scored more than 18 points in a quarter, but used suffocating defense to earn the 22-point win. UNC-Wilmington shot just 18-49 (36.7 percent) and went the final 4:33 of the game without making a basket. The Seahawks scored just five points in the fourth quarter and never led.
UNC forced 22 turnovers on the night, which turned into 20 points. The Seahawks scored just three points off 10 Carolina turnovers. For the Tar Heels, it’s the third time in eight games they have held an opponent to fewer than 50 points.
The win is Carolina’s 13th in a row at home against a non-conference opponent, a streak which stretches back to the 2020-21 season. The Tar Heels have two more non-conference games coming up before the ACC season starts, both of which also will be in Chapel Hill. Wofford will visit on Sunday, December 11 at 1 p.m. and USC-Upstate will do the same on Friday, December 16 at 6 p.m.
