Freshman star Mabrey Shaffmaster has been one of the key cogs in a program resurgence which has seen UNC volleyball reach 20 wins for the first time since 2016. After a successful weekend which included two road wins over Virginia Tech and Virginia, Shaffmaster has been named the ACC’s Freshman of the Week.

This is the third time this season Shaffmaster has won the Freshman of the Week honor. In the two wins over the Hokies and Cavaliers, Shaffmaster racked up a team-high 26 kills, and also amassed 25 digs and four service aces. She leads the Tar Heels this season with 30 aces.

Shaffmaster’s 20 digs against the Hokies were a career-high, and her 14 kills against the Cavaliers led all players from either team. She stuffed the stat sheet in the Virginia match, adding five digs, two aces and a block to the box score in the sweep.

Currently, Shaffmaster ranks in the conference’s top 10 in kills per set and points. Her 338 total kills this season is also best among freshmen in the ACC.

Shaffmaster and the Tar Heels will be back in action for Senior Day in Carmichael Arena on Sunday, when they host Miami at 1 p.m. Their regular season finale will be at Duke on November 26.
