After helping the Tar Heels to their first two ACC wins of the season last weekend, UNC volleyball star Mabrey Shaffmaster was named the ACC’s Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.

“I’m so proud of this worthy recognition for Mabrey,” UNC head coach Joe Sagula said.

In wins over Wake Forest and Virginia Tech, Shaffmaster racked up 24 kills and committed just four errors during the seven sets. Her 20 digs and five aces against the Hokies were both career highs. Against Wake Forest, Shaffmaster accumulated a .419 hitting percentage, also a career high.

“She has performed at such a high level all season,” Sagula said. “As a starter from day one, she continues to work hard every day, raise her level and be a great teammate.  I love how she competes and represents her team and Carolina volleyball.”

Shaffmaster is from New Castle, IN, and has started all 17 matches this season for the Tar Heels. She is the first member of the volleyball team to win a weekly honor this season. She ranks second on the team in kills and points, trailing only Nia Parker-Robinson.

Shaffmaster and the Tar Heels will be back in action Friday, October 15 when they travel up to New England to face Boston College.
