In addition to both the UNC men’s and women’s teams receiving national seeds in their respective NCAA team tournaments, six players from either team and three doubles pairs also earned bids to the NCAA individual championships this week.

On the women’s side, the doubles team of Elizabeth Scotty and Fiona Crawley, who won the 2021 Fall ITA Championship in November, are the No. 2 overall seed in the field. Scotty is pursuing her second straight NCAA doubles title, after winning it in 2021 with Makenna Jones. The duo of Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig are among eight alternates for the doubles field, meaning they could compete should another doubles team withdraw for any reason.

In singles, Morra, Crawley, Tanguilig, Scotty and Reilly Tran each earned spots in the field. UNC’s five selections equals its program record from 2021. Morra, who made the national semifinals in 2019 as a freshman, is the No. 5 overall seed in the field. Crawley leads the nation in singles victories with 40 and made the singles field for the second year in a row. Scotty, Tanguilig and Tran are each making their debuts in the singles tournament.

On the men’s side, the doubles team of Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger received a spot in the doubles field, and Cernoch also received a bid to the singles tournament. Cernoch and Kiger ended the season on a hot streak, having not lost a completed doubles set since March 6. Among the highlights were wins against top 10 foes Wake Forest and Virginia.

In singles, Cernoch went 14-3 in completed matches in the spring season and won six of his final seven. In the process, Cernoch improved his singles ranking from No. 87 in February to No. 33 in April.

The NCAA men’s and women’s championships will take place from May 23-28 in Champaign, IL, after the conclusion of the team tournaments.
