A thrilling match on Friday afternoon in Orlando saw the No. 4 seed UNC duo of Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty claim the NCAA Women’s Doubles Tournament championship in a tiebreaker over the Texas team of Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun.
Jones and Scotty won the match 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 to win just the second doubles title in UNC history, joining Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen (2007) as the only Tar Heels to ever accomplish the feat.
NCAA Doubles Tournament rules state that all matches will play a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set. With the score tied 8-8, the Tar Heel tandem came up clutch and scored the last two points to clinch the title.
The deciding tiebreaker was the second of the afternoon for UNC, as Jones and Scotty rallied from an early 3-0 deficit in the first set to win in a tiebreaker where they recorded seven of the final eight points.
It also allowed the Tar Heels to close out their season in style after coming up short in both the NCAA Team and Singles Tournaments following a 30-0 start to the season — and the end of what was a program-record 48-match winning streak.
The top-seeded Tar Heels were upset by Pepperdine in the team semifinals earlier this month, while ACC Player of the Year Sara Daavettila –the top-seeded player in the singles bracket — fell to No. 3 seed Emma Navarro of Virginia on Thursday after becoming just the fifth UNC player to ever reach the semifinals in that event.
For the fifth-year senior Jones, she caps an outstanding career at UNC with her first national title while Scotty concludes her sophomore season in just about the best way possible.
The duo also avenged a Round of 16 loss to the outstanding freshman team of Collins and Sun suffered by Daavettila and teammate Cameron Morra.
Collins and Sun were seeking to deliver Texas another national championship after the Longhorns defeated Pepperdine in the team finals back on May 22.
Jones and Scotty end the season having posted an 18-2 record in doubles competition.
