Another national championship is making its way back to Chapel Hill. The UNC women’s tennis doubles team of Elizabeth Scotty and Fiona Crawley captured the ITA Fall National Title Sunday afternoon in San Diego, becoming just the second pair in school history to do so.

Crawley and Scotty, seeded No. 4 in the doubles draw, took down a team from Old Dominion which was seeded No. 3 to win the title.

The ODU pair struck first in the match, taking the first set over Crawley and Scotty six games to four. But the two Tar Heels fought back in the second, winning decisively 6-2 and forcing a third-set, first-to-10 tiebreaker.

In the win-by-two format, the two pairs found themselves knotted at nine points apiece. But Crawley and Scotty held their nerve, winning the next two points to take an exciting championship match. It’s the first time a UNC pair has won the ITA Fall Doubles title since 2015.

It marks another high point in a banner year for Scotty, who won the NCAA Doubles Championship with Makenna Jones in May of this year.

Prior to last month, Scotty and Crawley had never played together as a doubles team, but they now seem to be an unstoppable force. The win makes the pair a perfect 10-0, with a national championship under their belt.

The fall season is now over for the UNC women’s tennis program, who won’t compete again until January 2022.
