Playing its final non-conference game of the regular season on Saturday night at Carmichael Arena, the UNC women’s basketball team fell just short in a 66-63 loss to the Yale Bulldogs–the Tar Heels’ first loss at home all season.

Senior guard Shayla Bennett was responsible for the majority of UNC’s scoring in the game, finishing with a team-high 25 points while junior forward Janelle Bailey added 16.

Bennett and Bailey represented the only Tar Heels to reach double figures in a game where the team shot just 29.5 percent from the floor.

Yale (8-3) built a 21-9 lead after the first quarter, before UNC (9-2) rallied to take a 46-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the final period, however, it was Yale that made the big plays in crunch time to steal the victory on the road.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by 24 points from Ellen Margaret Andrews.

“When you look at what we asked them to do since our loss to Alabama, we wanted to be deeper and we wanted to stay together,” UNC head coach Courtney Banghart said afterwards. “We stuck together and we got deeper, so they’re continuing to do what we’re asking them to do. Now it’s a quick turnaround for Pitt.”
