UNC senior Sara Daavettila took home the singles title at the ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, California on Sunday, defeating No. 6 seed Anna Turati from Texas in straight sets 7-6, 6-1.
Daavettila was the tournament’s No. 8 seed. On her road to the title, she defeated five players ranked in the top 50 nationally–including defending NCAA Singles Champion Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami in the semifinals.
Last month in the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Daavettila lost to Turati in three sets. This made Sunday’s match have a bit of a revenge factor as well.
Daavettila was also honored on Saturday with the ITA Sportsmanship Award for outstanding demeanor on and off the court.
