Both fourth-ranked Alexa Graham and seventh-ranked Sara Daavettila began Friday on a good note with wins in the Second Round of the Oracle ITA Masters Tournament in Malibu, but they each ultimately fell victim to losses in the quarterfinals later in the day.
The two Tar Heel women’s tennis standouts both won their opening matches in straight sets. Graham knocked off Jessica Livianu of St. John’s by a score of 6-1, 6-3, while Daavettila punched her ticket to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Hawaii’s Petra Melounova.
In the quarterfinals, Graham wound up losing 7-6, 6-1 to No. 14 Ashley Lahey of Pepperdine. Daavettila, meanwhile, was eliminated 6-1, 6-3 by Virginia’s Natasha Subash–a freshman who had earned the top seed for the tournament.
This marks the fifth year of the Oracle ITA Masters Tournament, which features 32 of the best men’s and women’s Division I tennis players in the nation.
