UNC senior Katie Hoeg was recognized Friday as a member of the Academic All-America Division I Women’s At-Large First Team by College Sports Information Directors of America.

Already the all-time leading scorer in program history, Hoeg becomes just the second Tar Heel women’s lacrosse player to earn Academic All-American honors–joining Porter Wilkinson, a Third Team selection in 2002. She is a biology major and a chemistry minor.

Candidates must have at least a 3.3 grade point average to be selected, but nobody on any of the three teams this year had anything lower than a 3.55.

The Academic All-American women’s at-large team includes the sports of: bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.

Hoeg was the only lacrosse player on the 15-member First Team.

“I’m extremely grateful to receive this honor and for the opportunity to represent UNC,” Hoeg said. “I have immense pride in my journey as a student-athlete, and I’m thankful for the Carolina community that pushes me to be the best that I can be.”
