Fans at Carmichael Arena on Sunday evening were treated to a defensive battle of epic proportions, as the UNC women’s basketball team defeated the Appalachian State Mountaineers by a score of 56-43.

Preseason All-ACC guards Paris Kea and Jamie Cherry carried the Tar Heels offensively in this game, as Kea scored a team-high 20 points while Cherry chipped in 17 of her own.

The UNC backcourt duo came up just six points shy of matching Appalachian State’s team total on a night where both teams shot an abysmal 29 percent from the floor.

Appalachian State (1-7) trailed by a slim margin of just 27-26 at halftime after holding the Tar Heels (6-2) to their lowest scoring half of the season.

Pre Stanley led the Mountaineers with nine points in the game, but she and her teammates struggled to find any semblance of offense once the second half rolled around.

UNC held Appalachian State to just 17 points after halftime, which helped greatly as the Tar Heels were able to put a solid cushion in between them and their opponents.

Kea and Cherry’s efforts on the offensive end ultimately proved to be more than enough for head coach Sylvia Hatchell and company to escape with their fourth consecutive victory.

A quick turnaround awaits the Tar Heels, however, as they’ll host Presbyterian at Carmichael Arena on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m.
