Despite a spirited fourth-quarter comeback, the UNC women’s basketball team fell short in its attempt at a road win in Winston-Salem on Sunday afternoon, falling by a score of 82-79 to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

The Tar Heels (16-11, 7-9 ACC) trailed by six heading into the final quarter, and ultimately built a three-point lead they took into the final seconds.

Wake Forest (14-14, 7-10 ACC) responded, however, by hitting a game-tying three-pointer courtesy of Gina Conti with three seconds remaining to send the game into an extra period.

From there, the Demon Deacons went 4-for-6 from the floor and made five free throws while UNC made just five of its 14 shot attempts and failed to convert anything at the charity stripe.

Senior guard Medinah Muhammad led UNC with 21 points in the game. In addition, Taylor Koenen (17 points), Shayla Bennett (16) and Malu Tshitenge (12) also scored in double figures for head coach Courtney Banghart.

This marks the fifth consecutive loss for the Tar Heels, representing their longest losing streak of the season.

“There are a lot of good takeaways,” Banghart said afterwards. “Obviously if you win that game you feel a little differently but as I told them in the locker room, there were some games in this losing streak when I felt frustrated. I’m not frustrated (today), I’m disappointed.”
