The UNC women’s basketball team avenged one of its only two losses of the season on Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena, defeating the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in overtime by a score of 77-74.

Senior forward Janelle Bailey led the Tar Heels with a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds, while freshman guard Alyssa Ustby scored all 15 of her points after halftime.

UNC (7-2, 2-2 ACC) also received 14 points from graduate transfer Petra Holešínská and a double-double (1o points, 10 rebounds) from freshman Kennedy Todd-Williams.

Wake Forest (4-3, 1-2 ACC) led by 12 points after the first quarter, before a 20-2 run by the Tar Heels in the second quarter helped UNC close the gap significantly.

Another run in the third quarter helped the Tar Heels turn a seven-point deficit into a four-point lead, but Wake Forest battled back once again to take the lead in the final minutes.

Three critical free throws from Todd-Williams and a lay-up by freshman guard Deja Kelly tied things up in regulation, but Holešínská’s three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out–sending the game to overtime.

The Tar Heels scored early in overtime and never relinquished the lead on the way to their second ACC victory of the season.

“In a possession game it comes down to who makes plays at the end and we made plays at the end this time”, head coach Courtney Banghart said afterwards. “The more we can play the better and we got five extra minutes so we’re grateful for that.”
