Playing at Carmichael Arena for the first time since 1986 on Sunday afternoon, the 17th-ranked UNC men’s basketball team was stunned by the Wofford Terriers by a score of 68-64–the second time Wofford has defeated the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill in the last three seasons.
Prior to the game, UNC announced that star freshman point guard Cole Anthony (knee) and sophomore guard Leaky Black (foot) would both miss the game with injuries.
Without their starting backcourt, the Tar Heels offensive struggles this season were magnified. Wofford took full advantage despite being severely undersized by converting on 14 of their 40 attempts from three-point range.
Junior forward Garrison Brooks led UNC with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Brandon Robinson added a career-high 16 points. Beyond that, no other Tar Heel scored in double figures.
UNC’s top offensive option behind Anthony so far this season has been freshman forward Armando Bacot, who had a team-high 13 rebounds on Sunday but finished with only eight points on a dismal 2-for-14 shooting performance from the floor.
The Tar Heels even out-rebounded Wofford 51-34, however that didn’t have much of an effect on the final outcome because they converted on just nine of their 23 layups in the game.
At halftime, UNC was clinging to a 36-32 lead before the second half started and the Terriers took off on a 16-0 run which gave them a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
UNC battled back down the stretch, but never got the lead closer than four points before the final buzzer.
For Wofford, senior guard Trevor Stumpe was the hero with a game-high 19 points.
Up Next:
The Tar Heels will head out west to Spokane as they return to action on Wednesday night with a prime-time road showdown against No. 6 Gonzaga.
Game Notes:
- Senior guard K.J. Smith started in place of Cole Anthony at point guard due to Anthony’s knee injury. The last time the Tar Heels played a game at Carmichael Arena prior to Sunday was in 1986, when Smith’s father–Kenny “The Jet” Smith–started for the Tar Heels.
- This marks UNC’s first three-game losing streak since January 2018.
- Wofford made 14 three-pointers and only 11 two-point shots, a perfect illustration of the way the Terriers like to play.
- The Tar Heels shot 36.5 percent as a team and made only 12 of their 20 free throw attempts.
