Technically, the kid should still be in high school.

UNC men’s tennis freshman William Blumberg decided, instead, to enroll early in Chapel Hill to get a head start on his collegiate career.

The native of Greenwich, Connecticut proved why on Saturday when he became the first Tar Heel to ever advance to the Semifinals of the NCAA Singles Tournament.

Playing at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, Blumberg defeated North Florida’s Jack Findel-Hawkins in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) on the way to the historic achievement.

Blumberg improved his singles record to a staggering 30-2 this season, and extended his current winning streak to 24 consecutive matches.

After taking home both the ACC and ITA National Freshman of the Year awards already, Blumberg appears poised to add another trophy to his collection before the tournament is over.

His NCAA Semifinal match against Mississippi State’s Nuno Borges is set for Sunday, May 28.
