The second-seeded UNC women’s team saw its season come to an abrupt end Thursday afternoon in Winston-Salem, as the Tar Heels were upset 4-1 by the No. 15 overall seed Stanford Cardinal.
UNC (28-4) went ahead 1-0 early on after taking the doubles point, but Stanford (21-3) took four straight victories in singles play to extend its current winning streak to 17 matches.
Stanford, like UNC, boasts one of the top lineups in the country with both teams having all six players ranked among the top 120 in the nation.
It was the Cardinal that came out in top form on Thursday, though, as they won all four singles matches in straight sets to move on to the quarterfinals.
