The season came to an end on Wednesday for the UNC women’s golf team, which finished ninth at the NCAA San Francisco Regional Tournament with a combined team score of 7-over-par.

UNC finished just two shots behind sixth place, the cut-off to advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Wednesday’s final round at TPC Harding Park saw the Tar Heels battling among the top six teams on the front nine, until they bogeyed the 18th hole twice and Louisville–which was tied with UNC for most of the day–shot 7-under-par on the last three holes.

No other teams had enough change down the stretch to affect their positioning on the leaderboard, causing UNC to be one of the teams left out.

Junior Kelly Whaley was the Tar Heels’ top performer during the event, as she shot even-par 72’s in all three rounds–all while setting the lowest single-season stroke average in program history at 73.24.

“The team fought very hard today,” head coach Jan Mann said afterwards. ” They never gave up. We were in the hunt the entire time. On the back nine, we were close to sixth place the entire time. Unfortunately, we came out a couple short, but I’m very proud of them.

“I’m disappointed for the team,” the coach continued. “I’m disappointed that we can’t head to Oklahoma State, but I’m looking forward to a great summer for them in preparation for next season.”
