UNC’s women’s basketball team beat the number one team in the country for the third time in program history on Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels knocked off top-ranked Notre Dame 78-73.

Sunday’s contest was competitive throughout with Carolina pushing its lead to double digits before Notre Dame tied the game.

Freshman guard Leah Church hit a big three to put UNC back in front for good.

Carolina was led by Paris Kea’s 30 points and 10 assists. Stephanie Watts, 19, and Janelle Bailey, 16, also scored double figures for the Tar Heels.

The win pushes UNC to 12-9 on the season and 3-4 in conference play. This was Notre Dame’s second loss of the season, with the first coming to perennial power University of Connecticut.

UNC will be back in action on Thursday hosting Georgia Tech.
