Looking to pull off its second upset over No. 8 NC State this month, the UNC women’s basketball team fell just short on Sunday in Raleigh as the Wolfpack came out on top by a score of 76-68.

Seniors Shayla Bennett and Taylor Koenen led the Tar Heel effort, scoring 24 and 21 points respectively–but their efforts would ultimately not be enough to get the job done in front of the Wolfpack crowd at Reynolds Coliseum.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Bennett and Koenen pulled the Tar Heels within four points with a little more than eight minutes remaining in the game. The Wolfpack managed to keep that lead from getting smaller, however, as they held on down the stretch to earn the win.

No other UNC player scored in double figures, while NC State out-rebounded the Tar Heels 46-28.

The win also improved the Wolfpack to 19-1 this season with an 8-1 record against ACC competition. UNC, meanwhile fell to 14-6 with 5-4 record in conference play.

“I’ve got a bunch of fighters and we’re going to fight to the end,” UNC head coach Courtney Banghart said afterwards. “It’s what we do. It’s what we’ve done all year. It’s a 40-minute game and what you’re going to see with the guys in blue is we’re going to give you everything we’ve got for the whole 40 minutes.”
