The UNC softball team swept both games in Saturday’s doubleheader as part of the Carolina Classic, defeating South Carolina 3-0 before topping Elon 7-5.

Brittany Pickett drove in a run while also striking out 12 hitters on the mound in the shutout win over the Gamecocks (11-3). Taylor Greene and Kristina Burkhardt also drove in runs for the Tar Heels in the opener, as South Carolina ended the game with just one hit.

In the second game of the afternoon, UNC jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings before adding two more runs as insurance in the fifth frame.

Elon used a grand slam to help power a five-run seventh inning, before the Tar Heels turned to Pickett on the mound once again. The senior star prevented any further damage and picked up the save.

UNC improved to 8-5 with the wins and advanced to Sunday’s Carolina Classic championship game against South Carolina.
