Fresh off an incredible performance that saw him strike out 13 of the 20 hitters he faced during UNC’s win over Miami this past Saturday, junior relief pitcher Cooper Criswell was named Wednesday as the Golden Spikes Award Gold Standard Performance of the Week winner.

The 6-foot-6 righty who spent the previous two seasons at Southern Union State Community College set a new all-time mark for most strikeouts out of the bullpen during the Mike Fox era at UNC, which extends back to 1999.

Criswell did not walk a single batter during his 5 2/3 innings on the mound, and also surrendered only three hits as the Tar Heels picked up a 9-6 victory.

In 30 innings out of the bullpen this season, Criswell has a miniscule 1.80 ERA to pair with 38 strikeouts.

He and the Tar Heels will be back in action this Friday when they travel to face Virginia as part of a three-game weekend series.
