Linebacker Allen Artis was reinstated to the UNC football team on Thursday, after misdemeanor charges for sexual battery and assault against a female student were dismissed.

Artis was arrested last fall after playing in two games for the Tar Heels, which led to his indefinite suspension from the team.

The events that led to the arrest happened in February of 2016. However, Artis claimed he and the woman had consensual sex and that there was no wrongdoing.

Charges were dismissed last week by Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall–who said, “the matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of the parties.”

Bubba Cunningham, UNC’s Director of Athletics, also released a short statement on the issue.

“After conversations with Coach [Larry] Fedora and Allen, we have reinstated Allen to our football program effective immediately,” Cunningham said.

One of Artis’ attorneys, Kerry Sutton, said they will petition the NCAA to get another year of eligibility for the rising senior, “since he lost the season due to no fault of his own.”
