Legendary UNC head field hockey coach Karen Shelton revealed this past weekend that graduate student Courtnie Williamson has been named the Tar Heels’ team captain for the upcoming 2020 season.

In addition, senior Amanda Hendry and junior Erin Matson were selected as vice-captains. All three captains are returning starters for a team that has gone undefeated and won the national championship in each of the last two seasons. They were selected by a player vote.

“I’m so proud of Courtnie and the way she’s grown and developed throughout her career,” Shelton said. “Her field hockey game has grown, she’s a great student, and she’s respected by her teammates. As a leader, she’s authentic and she’s not afraid to tackle tough issues with the team, but she leads in a positive way.

“Amanda and Erin are also big-time leaders for our team, and it’s great that we have the three of them spread over the field with Erin at forward, Courtnie on the back line and Amanda in goal,” the coach added. “The team chose well and I think the three of them will do an outstanding job.”

Williamson has provided the Tar Heels with a steadying force on defense, while Hendry earned All-ACC honors in 2019 for her work as a goalkeeper.

Matson, meanwhile, is the engine that makes the Tar Heel offense such a dominant force. The All-American tallied 33 goals and 15 assists in just 20 games last season.
