In the opening game of the College World Series, UNC defeated Oregon State 8-6. The Tar Heels used a five-run third inning to jump out to a 6-1 lead that Oregon State was unable to overcome.
The game started on a rough note for Carolina when pitcher Gianluca Dalatri was forced to step aside due to injury. Dalatri only pitched two-third of the first inning before a replacement was necessary.
The Beavers sent two-time Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Luke Heimlich to the mound to begin the game, but UNC was able to send him to the bench after only a handful of innings. Heimlich surrendered four hits and six runs, which, along with a hit by pitch and errors on defense, allowed the Tar Heels to gain an early lead.
Oregon State responded with a big third inning as well, scoring three runs to cut UNC’s lead to 6-4.
The game would remain scoreless until the sixth inning, when the Beavers were able to get hot and cut Carolina’s lead to two.
With this win, Carolina will play on Monday with the opponent to be decided by play later this weekend.
