The 2019 MLB Draft is officially underway, with hundreds of baseball prospects eager to hear their names called.
Fresh off of an ACC Tournament Championship and a berth in the Super Regionals, UNC has several players who are considered highly-ranked prospects for the draft. Players like Michael Busch, Tyler Baum, and Gianluca Dalatri are all expected to be drafted early in the 2019 MLB Draft.
We’ll keep track of all the North Carolina baseball players selected, as well as high school players who are committed to play in Chapel Hill.
This post will be updated throughout the draft as UNC players and commits are selected.
Michael Busch, junior
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected UNC junior Michael Busch with the 31st overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Busch put together a junior year where he batted .290 with 16 home runs and 57 RBIs. He was most recently selected as the MVP during Carolina’s run through the ACC Tournament.
Brennan Malone, high school commit
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected IMG Academy (FL) senior and UNC baseball commit Brennan Malone with the 33rd overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. An athletic pitcher, Malone sits in the mid-90s with his fastball and has a high upside.
Tyler Baum, junior
The Oakland A’s have selected UNC junior Tyler Baum with the 66th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. Baum took over as the Friday night starter for UNC – when a team’s top pitcher takes the mound – after Luca Dalatri underwent surgery that ended his 2019 season.
D.J. Herz, high school commit
The Chicago Cubs have drafted Sanford High School (NC) senior and UNC baseball commit D.J. Herz with the 252nd pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Austin Bergner, junior
The Detroit Lions have selected UNC junior Austin Bergner with the 262nd pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Ike Freeman, junior
The Cleveland Indians have drafted UNC junior Ike Freeman with the 430th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
