An eight-run explosion in the seventh inning on Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium helped propel the UNC baseball team to a 12-5 victory over the visiting UNCG Spartans, giving the Tar Heels their second victory in a row.

The Tar Heels (9-4) built a 4-0 lead through the first six innings before UNCG put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh to pull within one on the scoreboard.

It was at that time that UNC shifted into overdrive, taking advantage of a bases-loaded walk and a pair of crucial errors by the Spartans on the way to eight runs in the frame. Dylan Harris added a two-run double, while Angel Zarate then brought Harris home with his second single and RBI of the inning.

Harris had previously hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth inning, which helped him finish with a team-high three RBIs in the game.

Perhaps the wildest statistic of the night was the Tar Heels’ ability to score 12 runs despite only recording seven hits. The UNCG pitching staff played a key role by racking up 10 walks, as none of the Spartans’ nine pitchers were able to last three innings.

As a result, UNCG fell to 7-4 on the season.
