Leading 4-0 heading into to the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, the UNC baseball team watched it all slip away and then some–as the Iowa Hawkeyes rallied to send the game into extra innings before ultimately winning 5.4.
The Hawkeyes won the game on a walk-off home run against UNC reliever Nik Pryor, who had retired the first two batters of the 10th inning.
Prior to that point, the Tar Heels (7-4) were poised to take their first victory at the Cambria College Classic behind an absolute gem on the mound from Joey Lancellotti–who allowed just one hit through seven scoreless innings.
In the ninth inning, however, Iowa drew four consecutive walks to begin the inning and score its first run of the game. A two-run single and a sacrifice fly then followed to tie the game up at four runs apiece.
UNC then had a chance to go ahead in the 10th inning, but stranded three runners on base to end the threat.
Aaron Sabato, Will Stewart and Angel Zarate each had an RBI for the Tar Heels, while Danny Serretti scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning to represent the team’s fourth run.
