UNC came out Monday afternoon with the official penalties for 13 football players who were involved with a secondary NCAA violation for selling team-issued shoes.

Nine of the 13 players were suspended for four games and defensive backs Greg Ross and Tre Shaw will have to miss two games apiece. Quarterback Jack Davidson and offensive lineman Jonah Melton were each handed one-game suspensions.

The nine players with four-game suspensions include: quarterback Chazz Surratt, defensive ends Malik Carney, Tomon Fox and Tyrone Hopper, offensive linemen Brian Anderson, Quiron Johnson and Jordan Tucker, linebacker Malik Robinson and wide receiver Beau Corrales.

Most of the suspensions will begin with the Tar Heels’ season opener on Sept. 1 at California, but the NCAA approved the school’s request to stagger the suspensions of the defensive ends in order to protect the health and safety of the students.

As a result, Carney’s suspension will begin in Week Two at East Carolina and Fox’s will start in Week Five against Miami.

All players will still be allowed to practice, attend meetings and work out with the team during their suspensions.

“I am certainly upset by our players’ actions and how their choices reflect on them, our program and the University,” head coach Larry Fedora said. “These young men knew the rules and are being held responsible for the poor choices they have made. Accountability is an important core principle in this program. We will learn from this and aim to do better in the future.”

“We are disappointed,” director of athletics Bubba Cunningham said. “Chancellor Folt, Coach Fedora and I have high expectations of all of our students, coaches and staff, and we expect everyone to embrace and abide by all team and NCAA rules. We always will strive to get better.”
