After spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the UNC women’s cross country team, it was announced Friday that Dylan Sorensen was promoted as the new head coach of the program.

With Sorensen on staff, the 2020 season was the best the Tar Heels have had in over a decade — taking home a 14th place finish at the NCAA Championship Meet. It was UNC’s first appearance in the NCAA Championship since 2014.

Senior Paige Hofstad finished 29th overall at the NCAA Championship Meet, becoming the program’s first All-American since 2013.

Sorensen’s efforts in recruiting have also paid off in a big way for the Tar Heels in recent years, as they welcome the No. 1 ranked class in the country on the men’s side and No. 2 on the women’s side.

Chris Miltenberg, UNC’s Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, shared his confidence in Sorensen in a release announcing the change.

“Dylan has clearly established himself as one of the very best young coaches in the country and this promotion in title is a recognition of the role he already plays in our program,” said Miltenberg. “Our women’s cross country team had an incredible year and is on an extremely exciting trajectory headed into the future under Dylan’s leadership.

“Dylan continues to do an outstanding job of recruiting the right student-athletes, on both the men’s and women’s side, that are the future of our team,” Miltenberg added. “His impact is felt throughout our entire program and he is a key part of our future.”

Sorensen gained some social media fame in November for breaking a world record on the track. After previously breaking the record for the fastest mile while dribbling a basketball, he then doubled down and set a new record as a fundraiser for the FORevHer Tar Heels program, an initiative to empower and support women’s athletics.
