Led by five RBIs from Danny Serretti and another fantastic pitching performance by Austin Love, the 14th-ranked UNC baseball team opened its weekend series on Friday with a 9-3 win on the road over No. 21 Boston College.
Serretti hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to immediately give the Tar Heels (11-5, 7-3 ACC) a lead they would hold onto the rest of the game.
On the mound, Love tossed seven innings while allowing just two hits and compiling eight strikeouts. Boston College broke through for an unearned run in the home half of the fourth inning, but that was all the Eagles could muster against UNC’s top pitcher.
Serretti then made it 4-1 in favor of the Tar Heels with an RBI fielders’ choice in the fifth inning, before Johnny Castognozzi drove in two more runs with a double in the next frame.
Angel Zarate’s RBI single completed UNC’s scoring in the sixth, while Serretti added his fifth RBI in the eighth inning. The Tar Heels scored their final run on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Mikey Madej.
Boston College managed to hit a solo home run and an RBI triple against UNC reliever Nik Pry, but Pry was still able to record the final six outs of the game to wrap up the Tar Heel victory.
