With rain falling heavily over Navy Field in Chapel Hill on Monday night, the seventh-ranked UNC men’s lacrosse team saw its offense hit a major roadblock in a 6-5 loss to the No. 19 Richmond Spiders.

The Tar Heels (4-3) matched a season-low in scoring, as they also suffered their second loss in a three-day span after losing at home to Hofstra over the weekend.

Junior attacker Chris Cloutier scored two goals for UNC, with Michael Tagliaferri, Andy Matthews and Brian Cannon each adding one apiece to the Tar Heel effort.

Of those goals, however, only Cannon’s was scored in the second half.

After he found the back of the net with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Richmond (6-1) then held UNC scoreless for the next 30 minutes and change.

Trailing 5-3 entering the fourth quarter, the Spiders then found life and scored three times in the fourth quarter to steal the victory away–in what was an unusually sloppy game thanks to the wet field conditions.

The Tar Heels outshot Richmond 32-19, with the Spiders also turning the ball over 19 times compared to UNC’s 15.

Luck has not been on head coach Joe Breschi’s side recently, watching his team–the defending national champions–start off its five game homestand in Chapel Hill with a pair of close losses decided in the second half.

With four days off before their next game on Saturday against Dartmouth, the Tar Heels will have plenty of time this week to practice and work out the kinks during their spring break.
