In a battle between the nation’s top two scoring teams in NCAA Division I men’s soccer, the No. 2 Wake Forest Demon Deacons outlasted No. 4 UNC by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
The loss ended a nine-game winning streak for the Tar Heels (11-2, 4-1 ACC), while Wake Forest (11-1, 5-0 ACC) stayed unbeaten against conference competition.
Although Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead into halftime following a 39th-minute goal from Omir Fernandez, the Tar Heels responded nicely with a free-kick goal from Cam Lindley in the opening minutes of the second half.
The game’s deciding goal came in the 66th minute, when Wake Forest’s Jon Bakero sent home a perfect cross past UNC goalie Alec Smir.
UNC was unable to capitalize on any of its scoring chances down the stretch, despite finishing the night with 10 shots.

Another top-10 matchup awaits the Tar Heels, as they’ll take on No. 7 Louisville on Oct. 13.
