In a battle between two of the top three men’s soccer teams in the country on Sunday in Winston-Salem, the top-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons held on for a 1-0 win in overtime over No. 3 UNC.

After neither team could break through for a goal in regulation, Kyle Holcomb netted his fourth of the season in the 97th minute to give Wake Forest (4-1-0) the win.

The Tar Heels had a chance to steal the win in the final minute of regulation, but Santiago Herrera’s shot from the center of the box was saved by Wake Forest goalkeeper Andrew Pannenberg.

It was a closely contested match all the way through, as the Demon Deacons narrowly edged the Tar Heels in shots by an 8-6 margin.

Holcomb’s game-winning goal also happened to be the first goal that UNC (2-1-0) has allowed so far this season.
