Four different players scored goals for the sixth-ranked UNC field hockey team on Friday night in Charlottesville, as the Tar Heels picked up a huge 4-0 shutout victory over the No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers.

Ashley Hoffman opened the scoring for UNC just before halftime, but it was in the second half where most of the damage was done.

The Tar Heels (11-2, 3-1 ACC) racked up 17 of their 22 shots after the break, while also receiving goals from Catherine Hayden, Marissa Creatore and Feline Guenther.

Perhaps the most shocking part of the result, though, is that Virginia (10-2, 3-1 ACC) entered Friday’s game as the nation’s highest-scoring team, and possessed the country’s largest margin of victory–winning its games by an average of 4.55 goals.

“It was a team effort – I know that’s cliché, but it was,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “We prepared well during the week and then came out and executed incredibly well. We were prepared for what UVa posed and the threats they have.”
