The top-seeded UNC men’s lacrosse team steamrolled through its NCAA Tournament first round matchup on Saturday afternoon at Dorrance Field, defeating Monmouth by a score of 16-4.

ACC Offensive Player of the Year Chris Gray led the Tar Heels (12-2) with four goals and two assists, while breaking the UNC record for points in a season. His 83 points this year are two more than the previous record of 81 set by Bruce Ledwith in 1973.

Jacob Kelly, Nicky Solomon and Ryan O’Connell each added two goals apiece on a day where the Tar Heels put together their largest margin of victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1993.

Freshman goalkeeper Collin Kreig made 15 saves for UNC during just over three quarters of action, before backup Will Pettit finished the game with five saves over the final 12 minutes.

The win was the first NCAA Tournament victory for head coach Joe Breschi and the Tar Heels since winning the 2016 NCAA championship.
