Make it 39 consecutive victories for the top-ranked UNC field hockey team, which earned a tight 1-0 victory over the No. 19 Old Dominion Monarchs on Sunday in Chapel Hill.
Senior Megan DuVernois found the back of the net in the 41st minute off of a pass from teammate Hannah Griggs, marking the only scoring throughout the entire game.
It was the second straight game the Tar Heels (16-0) were without the nation’s leading scorer, sophomore Erin Matson, who is with the U.S. National Team in India participating in Olympic Qualifying.
UNC has never lost a game in 37 tries with Matson on the field.
“What has to happen is that people have to step up, and they’ve been doing that,” head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “We got two wins this weekend and I think people would have doubted we might be able to do that. So I’m proud of the team and I’m proud of the defense and the offense as well.”
Sunday was an incredibly tough win for the Tar Heels, who created 11 shots while allowing Old Dominion (9-6) to get 10.
This was the first time UNC has had a win in which it scored less than two goals since Aug. 31, 2018 against Princeton–a game where DuVernois was also responsible for the game’s only goal.
