A goal by Yentl Leemans with less than three minutes left in regulation on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill lifted the top-ranked UNC field hockey team to a 3-2 win over the Boston College Eagles, clinching the ACC regular season title for the Tar Heels.
UNC is also 15-0 this season (6-0 ACC) and has won its last 38 games now dating back to the 2017 NCAA Tournament, extending its own ACC record.
After a scoreless first half on Friday, Boston College took the lead late in the third quarter with a goal from Charlotte Von Huelsen.
The Tar Heels responded with back-to-back goals from Riley Fulmer and Megan DuVernois to take the lead, but the Eagles tied things up 2-2 when Elizabeth Warner scored with five minutes remaining.
Leemans then played hero when she scored the game-winning goal just over two minutes later, giving UNC the conference regular season title.
UNC was also without the nation’s leading scorer Erin Matson, who left Friday for India to compete with U.S. National Team in Olympic Qualifying.
“I have to shout-out Boston College – I think they are so good and so well-coached,” UNC head coach Karen Shelton said afterwards. “They took away our bread and butter, the stuff we like to do. They scouted us and coached their kids to take that away and it caused problems for us. So I’m proud of our team for overcoming that.”
